Like the time my sisters and I made a shell necklace for our grandmother and presented it to her at our dining room table. We had collected snail and periwinkle shells on the beach, choosing similar sized shells with little holes just large enough to push through fishing line. But when we presented her the finished necklace and she held it up to admire its length and beauty, the knot gave way and shells slid down her lap and danced noisily across the hardwood floor. And what did I do? I turned and faced the wall.
